Adjective [Chinese]

IPA: /pʰɑŋ⁵⁵ ʈ͡ʂʰoʊ̯⁵¹/ [Mandarin, Sinological-IPA, standard], /pʰɑŋ⁵⁵ ʈ͡ʂʰoʊ̯⁵¹/ Chinese transliterations: pāngchòu [Mandarin, Pinyin], ㄆㄤ ㄔㄡˋ [Mandarin, bopomofo], pāngchòu [Hanyu-Pinyin, Mandarin, standard], ㄆㄤ ㄔㄡˋ [Mandarin, bopomofo, standard], pangchòu [Mandarin, Tongyong-Pinyin, standard], pʻang¹-chʻou⁴ [Mandarin, Wade-Giles, standard], pāng-chòu [Mandarin, Yale, standard], pangchow [Gwoyeu-Romatsyh, Mandarin, standard], панчоу [Mandarin, Palladius, standard], pančou [Mandarin, Palladius, standard]
Etymology: Originally predominantly written as 肨臭 or 胮臭. 胮 (pāng) is the orthodox character, and 肨 may also be used to replace according to certain dictionaries. The standard dictionary Xiandai Hanyu Cidian prescribes 胮 as a variant form of 膀 (pāng) so 膀臭 is also considered proper. Nowadays more and more written as 滂臭 (pāngchòu), character 滂 being etymologically unrelated yet some reckoning it more vivid for having the radical 氵 (shuǐ) representing water which can be found in most stinky things.
